Not the greatest training week at the beginning, but I stepped it up towards the end. I had a minor pity party the first half of the week and a meltdown on Wednesday, but picked myself back up and kept going. Nothing spectacular to speak of.

Now, for the highlight of the week…your World Champion New England Patriots!!! Yeah baby!!! Such an intense, exciting game. I watched at a friend’s house with a few people and we were all standing up for the last 10-15 min of the game screaming at every little thing. It was mayhem. At least when we know we’ve lost, we can still lose like men. That fight that the Seahawks started at the end was just completely unnecessary and only made them look disgraceful. Awesome game. Awesome, awesome game.

Nothing else to speak of, so in honor of our Super Bowl victory, I’m going to share the Imagine Dragons song, Warriors. It’s part of a hype-up video released right before the game and I think they did an awesome job with it. I get goosebumps every time I’ve watched it.

Training got fairly messed up by a little thing we like to call “winter in New England” aka Winter Storm Juno. I’m not sure what our official tally was at the end of the blizzard, and it was too hard to judge with all the drifts due to high winds, but I would guess in the neighborhood of 20-24″. Pretty close anyway. So that’s what my week ended up looking like. Still decent and only one missed run.

The storm also caused a cancellation of one of my appts, but I had one this morning. Not gonna talk about those other than to say today was a tough one. Not much else going on either. Staying busy, trying to keep to a schedule around the appts so it’ll be a simple transition back to work when I return.

Yesterday was Tara’s 30th birthday. We celebrated last weekend with friends, had dinner out last night with her boss and will be having dinner tonight with her parents.

I’m excited about the Super Bowl on Sunday and watching my Patriots play with some good friends.

Face The Music Friday #62: The One With All The Training

Oh, hey. Hi there. Remember me?

First, let’s get the training out of the way. I’m not gonna use the usual format because there are too many missed weeks to type up, so here’s a screenshot of this month. Not too shabby if I say so myself.


January Training


Things are going well so far with the running. I can definitely tell my yoga is helping so I’m glad I’ve stuck with it. Running 4 days a week has been tough, but manageable so far. I’ve stuck almost religiously with the plan I’m following with the exception of skipping one long run day to catch up on some rest and skipping my Thursday run this week because my hips were really sore from doing a double workout on Tuesday. I still did yoga in it’s place, so I’ll call it a win.

Let’s move on and be a little more serious. I want to thank my blogger friends who have left comments checking in on me. It makes the interwebs feel a little smaller and it’s nice to know people notice when you’re not around.

Depression and anxiety are a nasty duo. One or the other is bad enough on it’s own. It’s not been a good few months. Every day is a struggle to just get out of bed. I think my training hasn’t suffered only because it’s one thing I can control. I have people to be accountable to as well.




On the plus side, I have an amazing network of friends (who really are family) keeping my head above water. I’m entering into more intensive therapy while taking a leave of absence from work for a short time. I’ve even gone back on medication to help level me out. It’s been a long while since I’ve taken anything and am hoping this will only be temporary.



Since I’ve missed so many weeks of blogging, I owe you a few songs. These are some of my obsessions lately. Music is a huge part of helping me feel better. Headphones in, volume up, turn off the whirlwind.

So…I made it through Christmas. My first one without celebrating with family. I celebrated with my friends instead.

We celebrated Festivus on Tuesday complete with the airing of grievances (with the pole!) and feats of strength. Christmas Eve was spent with Tara’s family and then that night and Christmas day were spent with our besties (thanks guys).

I got some nice gifts, including some very useful workout stuff. I had gotten Tara two tickets to Celtic Women and that was a big hit as well. I even managed to keep it a secret the last 3 months since I bought them! If you know me, you know I’m horrible with surprises because I just want people to open their stuff right away so this was a major win.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and enjoyed time with those that matter most. Here is this week’s song choice…

Quick update as I started training for the Marine Corps Marathon this week. I think that having this training plan to follow will give me something to focus on so it’s a good thing.

Tomorrow is my birthday so some friends are coming over for a game night and then we’re going to go out to breakfast Sunday morning. I’m really looking to spend some good down time with great people.

Face The Music Friday #58

I have nothing noteworthy to speak of in terms of workouts this week. Between appointments, plans and having a stupid cold, I’m lucky I even got my butt out of bed.

Tara and I did have a lot of fun Tuesday night with some friends though. We went out to eat with them at a wing place down the street from our neighborhood because one of them was craving wings and had never been there! What we didn’t realize was that it was trivia night, so I finally got to do my first pub quiz type thing! I was very excited and it was a lot of fun. It was 4 rounds – round 1 was general trivia, round 2 was songs, round 3 was pictures of stoner movies we had to name and round 4 was RI history. We did horrible in round 1 and 4 but we almost aced both rounds 2 and 3! I’d love to do it again, but being on a Tuesday night sucks.

Tomorrow is the big day. Tomorrow, we will meet at 5am and soon after begin our ruck march of the Boston Marathon route – 26.2 miles over the course of 12 hours. To say I’m excited is an understatement, but I’m super nervous as well. It feels like before a big race is coming up, even though this is a totally different animal.

Face The Music Friday #57

OK, so I lied. In my last Friday post, which was now two weeks ago, I said I’d still pick a song every week. I just couldn’t be bothered to write lately. There’s a lot going on with me and things take priority – this blog took a backseat so last Friday, you missed a song.

I’m hoping to get back to it semi-regularly, but I don’t know how to. I feel like what I normally write about isn’t worth writing. When I say I’m in a funk, it’s a big one. A mental one. I know…too much seriousness.

Anyway – an update of sorts. Since last we spoke, I volunteered at Tuff Scrambler with my teammates and cheered them on while wildly snapping an excessive amount of photos.



The following day, we rucked the Brain Injury 5K. It was windy and cold, but we had a great time.



This past weekend, I did some partial fall clean-up, cheered my friends on at the Monster Dash and had my first pedicure.



Monday, oh Monday. I went for my first run since my half marathon jacked up my foot last month. Interestingly enough, the foot that bothered me after the half was OK, but my “GORUCK foot” bothered me after. A few days later it’s perfectly fine so I’m just being cautious for now. But that’s exciting. I like that I no longer refer to my feet as “right” and “left”. They are now “Half foot” and “GORUCK foot”.

I was contacted through the blog by a marketing company asking if I wanted to check out YakTrax. Um, yes please! They’ve been on my Amazon wish list for a while so I’m really excited to try them out once the nasty winter gets here. I’ll fill you all in once I give them a whirl.

I’ve been doing rucking with friends and got back into going to Unleashed. I’ve gone to a Train Reaction class and two kickboxing classes in the last two weeks…so that’s a start. I’m still too overwhelmed to go by myself for now, but my friends have been amazing making sure I get out and do the stuff I enjoy so they’ve gone along with me for that added incentive.

This weekend, I’ll be attending my first Comic Con. Julie, Dan, Tara and I will be going to both days. There was a Groupon a while back for a VIP package for both days with early access each day, so we figured why not pull the trigger since we’ve talked about it before. I’m excited to see people from shows I love, including a former Doctor. It’s not a Doctor I’ve watched, but still cool nonetheless. I’m looking forward to the Walking Dead and Supernatural panels and it might be interesting to see Shatner and Takei.

Lastly, in just over 1 week, I will be rucking the Boston Marathon route to raise money for Carry The Fallen/Active Heroes. To those that have already donated, thank you SO much. Face The Music Friday #56

Workouts? What workouts? Other than GORUCK on Saturday, working at the Scituate Art Festival Sunday and Monday and mowing the lawn with my ruck on Wednesday, I’ve done nothing. My mojo is gone. Even writing this post seems tedious. I’m not even going to get into it, but just going to say that friends are a valuable thing.

I’m helping out at the Unleashed tent tomorrow for Tuff Scramblers, then I’m going to ruck the Brain Injury 5K on Sunday since I still can’t run.

Since I don’t want to disappoint the “fans”, I’m still going to pick music every week. I’m throwing it back about a decade today. Have a good weekend everybody.

I had made a last minute appointment to have my foot worked on again at the chiro last Friday for this past Monday night. I got a call around noonish that the doc wasn’t feeling well and would be canceling her appointments – HUGE bummer. I’ve been doing everything possible to get my foot better faster and that would have helped a great deal. As of this morning, I’m glad to say I’m not in 100% pain with every step – probably only 80% at this point, and I’ve even taken a few steps in the last two days that were pain free!

Wednesday I finally got around to backing up our phones and iPads so that I could install the new iOS. I even did a full back-up of the Mac through our G-Drive and then finally upgraded our iPhoto. It. Took. FOREVER. I feel better now that it’s done though.

Not much going on this week. This weekend will be all about resting from activities. Last weekend was a blur and next weekend will be, too, so this weekend will hopefully be yard work, organizing some rooms in the house and hanging out with some friends on Sunday. I hope the weather plays along.

You will notice a lot of rest this week and I’m not a big fan. I want to run. I want to run now. Boo hoo, waaaah.

OK, pity party over, let’s talk about the week.

We had a great time on Saturday at my aunt and uncle’s surprise 30th anniversary dinner that my cousin put together. She did a really great job getting it all set up, inviting lots of people (most of whom I didn’t know) and keeping it all a secret. It was up in MA, where they live, near where I grew up at a restaurant called The Fours. It’s a sports themed place with awesome food. I had my steak and cheese egg rolls I’ve craved since the first time we ever went there with them over a year ago. They’re that good. They also had a cake made with a picture drawn on it of them at their wedding. It came out really good! Every time we have a gathering, the cake is always from Veronica’s Sweetcakes because my cousin’s best friend’s family owns the bakery. They’re amazing!!

Sunday was the birthday party for the twin boys that Tara nannies. It was held at a place called Teamworks. They have indoor soccer, bouncy houses, arcade games, etc so it was a madhouse. It was also VERY muggy on Sunday so we were sweating just standing around inside for 5 minutes. We hung out for just over an hour but I couldn’t stand on my foot anymore so we took off and came home to watch a VERY scary Patriots game that I had DVR’d while we were gone.

So. The foot. Let’s talk about it, shall we? It was feeling better throughout the week last week. By the weekend, I could almost walk without a limp. I decided if I was taking it easy, now would be the perfect time to start back up doing yoga, so I threw that in a couple of days this week. My foot felt pretty good by Tuesday, so I said I’d try a more weight bearing activity like the elliptical (so not completely pounding on it) and if I was going to do that I might as well throw my ruck on for training. I think I’ve been paying for that decision ever since. My foot started hurting more again – not enough to limp, but enough to bother me all day. Back to the drawing board I guess.

In other news, I have a HUGE challenge coming in November that I will share more about in it’s own post soon. For now, I have the RI Run For The Fallen in the morning (which I will be rucking and Tara walking with me) and then I will head home, shower, try to maybe take a nap and then meet my team for the New England Fitness Challenge Saturday night into Sunday. I’m not competing but will be the team manager and just cheer them on and do what I can throughout the night to keep them moving.

This week I don’t have a particular reason for picking this song, but I just really like it. Tara had me making her some playlists last weekend and I came across it again in the process. It’s great on a run. Have a great weekend everybody!
